The Meaning of the Pig

In traditional culture, the pig represents the feminine principle (âm), gentleness, fertility, and abundance — values closely tied to folk beliefs.

Original folks

English translate

“Trăng rằm mười sáu trăng treo

Anh về sửa soạn mua heo nạp tài”

Hay như câu:

”Anh về sắm nếp cho dư

Sắm con lợn béo để tháng tư em về”.

“When the moon is full on the sixteenth day,

I’ll prepare a pig as my betrothal gift.”

Or:

“I’ll buy glutinous rice aplenty,

And a fattened pig so that in April you’ll be my bride.”

The pig symbolizes the prosperity of the groom’s family. No matter how poor, a wedding feast required at least one pig to honor guests:

“One fat pig, one jar of rice liquor (rượu tăm).”

Materially, a pig provides both lean and fatty meat, enabling varied, plentiful dishes. Symbolically, the fattened pig is a sign of fertility, wealth, and thriving happiness. Presenting a roasted pig or pig’s head in weddings conveys blessings of many descendants, abundant life, prosperity, and family unity.
