The Meaning of Tea and Wine

In Vietnamese culture, tea plays a vital role in social interaction, symbolizing respect and harmony — a tradition called trà lễ or trà đức. Beyond daily use, tea is essential in worship and weddings:

English translate

“Chè ngon nước chát xin mời

Nước non non nước nghĩa người chớ quên”

“Fragrant tea, bitter taste — please accept,

Mountains and rivers, don’t forget this bond.”

Wine, too, is inseparable from community rituals, festivals, and especially weddings. The betrothal offerings always included rượu tăm (strong home-distilled rice liquor):

English translate

“Một con lợn béo, một vò rượu tăm”

Hay như câu:

“Chín gánh rượu nếp, chín vò rượu tăm”

“One fat pig, one jar of rice liquor (rượu tăm).”

Or:

“Nine baskets of rice wine, nine jars of rice liquor (rượu tăm).”

Rượu tăm, high in strength and clarity, bubbles when poured. It was offered to the bride’s ancestors to seek permission for the union. Any important words or requests during the ceremony were accompanied by a libation of wine. For the newlyweds, sharing wine marked the start of their life together:

“Rượu lưu ly chân quỳ tay rót

Cha mẹ uống rồi nối gót theo anh”.

“With bent knees I pour the crystal wine,

Parents drink first, then I follow my husband.”
