Dong Ho Paintings
The creation of a Dong Ho painting is a meticulous process rooted in Vietnamese tradition. Each step, from the unique sheen of the paper to the precise layering of colors, contributes to the distinctive beauty and cultural significance of Dong Ho art.
- Preparing the Paper: Special dó paper is coated with crushed điệp shells mixed with rice paste. This creates the unique shimmering white surface.
- Carving the Woodblocks: Skilled artisans painstakingly carve intricate designs onto wooden blocks. Separate blocks are created for each color in the final print.
- Applying the Ink: Natural pigments are mixed and carefully applied to the carved woodblocks.
- Printing the Image: The paper is pressed firmly onto the inked woodblock, transferring the design. This process is repeated for each color, layering the image gradually.
- Drying the Painting: The finished painting is left to dry naturally, allowing the colors to set and the paper to stiffen.
