The Meaning of Trầu cau
(Betel and Areca)

“A quid of betel opens the conversation.” (Miếng trầu là đầu câu chuyện)

Betel and areca holds a central role in Vietnamese weddings. While many cultures chew betel, only the Vietnamese elevated it into a ceremonial rite. From ancient times, betel and areca were indispensable in betrothal, even when scarce or out of season. Betel and areca are also symbols of matchmaking and union, reflected in folk verses:

“Trầu này trầu quế trầu bồi

Trầu loan trầu phượng trầu tôi lấy mình

Trầu này trầu tính trầu tình

Trầu nhân trầu nghĩa trầu mình lấy tôi”

“This quid of betel is betel of fidelity,

Betel of phoenix, betel of love I offer to you.

This quid of betel is betel of promise,

Betel of loyalty, betel of affection, will you take me?”

In folk culture, betel and areca expresses sincerity and deep affection. A man offering a quid of betel to a woman is a gesture of earnest intent, while a woman returning a quid signifies acceptance of affection. The mâm trầu cau (betel-and-areca tray) typically displayed an areca cluster at the center, surrounded by neatly arranged betel leaves, covered with red silk embroidered with the dragon-and-phoenix motif and the golden song hỷ (double happiness) character.

Betel and areca are seen as metaphors of people: the betel vine entwines the areca tree, standing beside a stone slab — together forming a legend. Thus, betel and areca has become the symbol of loyalty, fidelity, and the eternal bond of love and marriage.
